Information: Sranan Tongo is spoken and understood by almost any inhabitant of Surinam. For many it is their mother tongue. This Creole language is quite young and originated in the middle of the 17th century among the first slaves that came from Africa to Surinam. Sranan Tongo has been influenced by English, Portuguese and African languages, but there are also Dutch words to be found. There are around 80,000 speakers.
