Geographical use: Catalonia (= former kingdom of Valencia, the Baleares and Pityusen), the eastern Pyrenean, Alghero (Sardinia), Andorra and some places in Cuba and Argentina

Information: In the 12th century Catalan was the official language of the kingdom Aragón. From that period originated the first Catalan writings. For years some linguists thought that Catalan was no more than a dialect of Provençal. Because of some unique features, it is now considered to be a separate language.
