Information: Acoma is a village in the
US state New Mexico and was founded in 1075. The village was discovered
by the Spanish in 1540. The word 'acoma' is Keresan for people of the
white rocks. Acoma (pronounced either Eh- Ko-Ma or Ah-Ko-Ma) is derived
from the Keresan word Hak’u.
Currently the 'Acoma Language Retention Program' is keeping the language
alive by teaching it in schools. The program is a great succes.
