Type of script in which notions are represented by so-called pictographs: 'pictures' that show a natural relationship with what they refer to in reality. The word 'sun' is represented by a (stylized) image of a sun. One of the best known forms of pictographic writing is the Egyptian hieroglyphs. The Chinese character script also has a pictographic origin. The advantage of a pictographic script is that one can also read it without knowing the language in question. The big disadvantage is that many symbols are needed to denote all notions, which makes it very hard to study the script.
