demotic script

Script that developed from the Old Egyptian hieratic script in the 7th century BC. Demotic was used for layman purposes. Just as the hieroglyphs and the hieratic script, the demotic script is made up of three basic elements: pictograms, phonograms and determinatives. The Demotic characters, joint by joining signs, are pretty hard to read. It was suppressed in the middle of the 5th century BC by the Coptic script that used Greek letters.
